Shadow in the Glass came out on May 4th, 2021
Okay, I actually really loved this book. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me an ARC of The Shadow in the Glass! This book was nothing like what I imagined it to be when I first started reading it. For some reason I thought it was a YA fantasy novel, but it is definitely an Adult book and I loved the twists!
The Shadow in the Glass is a dark, gothic and twisty Cinderella Retelling that I personally felt was very cleverly adapted. The book asks the question of what you would do if you were offered anything in the world…or rather, what price would you be willing to pay to achieve what you wanted. This fairy godmother isn’t willing to just give out wishes for free, there must be something given in return.
Just as Rumplestiltskin says in Once Upon A Time “All magic comes with a price dearie…” And once that price is paid are you still the same person you were before the wish was granted?
There were slight leanings toward it being a phycological thriller at times and I wish it had dived deeper into that, but I still really appreciated the retelling for what it offered. This is not a book that stays true to the original Disney inspired Cinderella plot that we all know and love, this is a very loose retelling of the fairytale. I think it is best to know this going in so as not to cause disappointment.
The Shadow in the Glass is perfect for fans of:
ALICE – A dark and psychological retelling of Alice in Wonderland
Deathless – A story rooted in Russian Folklore that is the definition of dark. It personally left me feeling a bit empty by the end of it, but I went into this one expecting a romance…it’s not that!
Uprooted – A loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Full of grey characters, magic and a bit of romance!
Trigger Warning for The Shadow in the Glass:
There is mention of rape throughout the entire novel as well as murder.
MILD SPOILERS TO FOLLOW: There is a forced miscarriage in the book.
