As an avid Pride and Prejudice fan, You’ve Got Mail was destined to be one of my favorite Rom Com movies. There is something simply magical about the pairing of Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan and books! I have recently read 4 books that give off major You’ve Got Mail vibes and/or are stated as being retellings of the movie and they are all unique and perfect to satisfy that squishy rom com loving itch. Let’s discuss.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy

The undertaking of hart and mercy cover. green book with skeleton hands holding a pink heart with two people inside

You’ve Got Mail but…in a fantasy setting with an Undertaker and a Marshal.

I actually started reading this without realizing that it was a You’ve Got Mail retelling but about 1/3 of the way through it became glaringly obvious in the best way possible and my nostalgia loving heart grew 10x it’s normal size after reading. Seriously, this has become one of my new favorite romances and it is a unique blend of contemporary/fantasy. It’s perfect for fans of the macabre who still want to read romance! The spice happens later in the book but it definitely gets spicy.

(Spice scenes can easily be skipped for non spice lovers, or enjoyed for the spicy connoisseurs)

To Sir with Love

To Sir with love cover one hand holding champagne and the other a cell phone

You’ve Got Mail but…with blind dating and a champagne shop.

Gracie decides to take over her late fathers failing champagne shop, but faces a huge obstacle in the shape of a sexy and arrogant man who wants to buy out the shop to put in a parking lot. It’s safe to say that the two don’t hit it off well…except for when they are exchanging emails on a blind dating app. She knows him simply as “sir” and quickly falls in love with the mysterious online version of him…too bad she can’t stand him in real life.

Tacos for Two

Tacos for Two cover women leaning out of a food truck window. You've Got Mail retelling

You’ve Got Mail but…two food truck owners “warring” against each other.

Two food truck owners go head to head in a Food Truck Festival/Competition and losing is not an option for either. When Jude realizes that his biggest competition is the woman he has been falling in love with online, he must decide if he is willing to sacrifice his dreams for love. This is a super cute low to no steam romance. Also worth mentioning…there are Pride and Prejudice references so IMEDIATELY YES.

Alex, Approximately

Alex, Approximately cover. Blue with a white moped scooter

You’ve Got Mail but…a YA book about a teen girl who doesn’t realize that her worst enemy is exactly who she is looking for.

Two teens fall in love online over their shared love of movies and film. They live miles away from each other until Bailey’s dad moves them exactly to where “Alex” lives…Bailey fears that Alex might not like her real life self as much as her online persona so she keeps her new address a secret. She soon finds herself falling for someone else though and she must decide if she wants to hold onto the online fantasy of Alex…or risk taking a chance on someone real.

Alex, of course, is hiding some secrets of his own though…

I am not a YA contemporary fan but I did find this book to be very sweet, and if you love You’ve Got Mail then it’s definitely worth a read.

I will continue to add more You’ve Got Mail inspired books to this list as I read! If you have read any please let me know, I would love the recommendations! If you are looking for some other contemporary romances to fall in love with, here are a few more of my favorites too!
