Mini Book Review: Pride and Premeditation

Pride and Premeditation book review - Just like Gilmore Girls

A huge thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me a sneak peek at Pride and Premeditation! I have only one thing to say, I loved it! Pride and Premeditation is the first book in a YA mystery series that will come out on April 6th. The author added the perfect amount of “flair” to the story without stripping away the substance that makes Pride and Prejudice so great. This has earned the book a position at the top of my P&P adaptation recommendations!

Here, Mr. Bennet runs a lawfirm called Longbourne and Sons (oh the irony) and Elizabeth studies under her dad, helping out at the office when she can. When a murder takes place Mr. Bingley, of all people, is accused and Elizabeth sets her sights on proving his innocence. She is looking for a permanent role at Longbourne and Sons and her father tells her she must prove she can solve a case with logic before he hires her. This is her chance!

She sets out on her own to solve the case and along the way meets Mr. Darcy, and a cute and understated enemies to lover’s relationship begins to bloom. One of my favorite aspects of the story are all of the characters personalities. I loved the additions that were made (specifically with Georgiana, who now has a bit of spunk to her) and the personalities that stayed true to the original classic, such as Elizabeth. The character development was spot on for me, and everyone’s personalities were fleshed out in a really smart and fresh way. Overall I really enjoyed the writing style!

Favorite Quotes from Pride and Premeditation

The following quotes give a little glimpse into the feminist, sassy, quirky writing that captures Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Premeditation so perfectly without, hopefully, spoiling too much!

“Jane. I will not live my life sitting by the side while there are so many men making a mess of things.”

“…a young lady will never find a husband if she’s in the habit of retiring early.” (Never has a quote struck so close to home.)

“A quarrel! Over my Lizzie! Over Lydia or Jane, I would have believed it, but Lizzie!”

Pride and Prejudicial – Another Pride and Prejudice retelling centering around lawyers and the court.

Death Comes to Pemberley – A pride and Prejudice inspired murder mystery that puts Mr. Wickham in the hot seat. Did he kill his friend, or was it someone else?

My Plain Jane – Another classic retelling, this time for Jane Eyre, with loads of wit and sass!

Jackaby – A YA paranormal mystery series with nods to Sherlock Holmes.

What not to look for with Pride and Premeditation:

Honestly, I would recommend this book to almost everyone. It’s cute and smart and innovative and perfectly captures the essence that is Pride and Prejudice, in my opinion. However, if you are looking for a hard to solve gritty murder mystery than this might not be the best pick. There is definitely murder, and it actually gets a bit more gruesome than I expected it to, but on the whole it’s a light hearted cozy mystery. There is a smart twist to it that I really liked, but it isn’t super twisty if that is what you are looking for in your next read.
